Coricladus quiteriensis gen. et sp. nov., a new conifer in Southern-Brazil Gondwana (Lower Permian, Paraná Basin) Anais da ABC (AABC)

A new taxon of conifers (Coricladus quiteriensis) is described based on megafloristic remains from the roofshale level at the Quitéria Outcrop (Rio Bonito Formation - Lower Permian - Southern Paraná Basin - Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil). This megafloristic community is included in the Botrychiopsis Zone - Botrychiopsis valida Sub-Zone (Kungurian/Roadian). The assemblage, preserved as impressions, do not present remains of epidermic characters, and is composed mainly of isolated vegetative branches with spirally disposed acicular leaves, presenting a conspicuous central vein and also isolated fertile branches with sparse and irregular leaves and terminal cones. Early Eocene 40Ar/39Ar age for the Pampa de Jones plant, frog, and insect biota (Huitrera Formation, Neuquén Province, Patagonia, Argentina) Ameghiniana

The Pampa de Jones fossil site, a stratigraphically isolated roadcut near the northeastern shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake in Neuquén Province, Argentina, holds a rich fossil biota including a macroflora, a microflora, insects, and most famously, an ontogenetic series of pipid frogs. The site exposes tuffaceous mudstone and sandstone beds of probable lacustrine origin, considered to belong to the volcanic Huitrera Formation. However, there have been no reliable age constraints for the fossil assemblage. We undertook laser fusion analyses of sanidine and biotite crystals occurring in a tuff layer found 4.4 m above the main fossil horizon. Up to date, little is known about the relationship between historical demography and the current genetic structure of A. Angus As a first effort towards overcoming this lack, microsatellite data scored in six populations and isozyme allele frequencies published for 11 natural stands of this species were analysed in order to assess molecular signatures of populations' demographic history. Signatures of genetic bottlenecks were captured in all analysed populations of southeastern Brazil. Among southern populations, signatures of small effective population size were observed in only three out of 13 populations. Forest environments have continuously existed in Antarctica since the late Paleozoic and only disappeared from this continent since the Neogene. Nevertheless, the structure of these forests underwent substantial evolutionary changes. During the late Cretaceous, forests dominated by conifers and pteridophytes were gradually replaced by angiosperm-dominated forests. Elements common to these Antarctic forests are important constituents of the recent Valdivian Forest. During the Turonian stage of the Late Cretaceous, the Antarctic Peninsula and Patagonia were reconnected by a land bridge after a separation since the end of the Jurassic.
